Fridge Water Tastes Bad? Ice Maker Not Working? What to Check First

You press the water dispenser and something tastes... off. Maybe it's metallic. Maybe it's musty. Or maybe the ice cubes have that weird cloudy look and a flavor you can't quite place. Your fridge is supposed to give you clean, cold water on demand. When it doesn't, it's frustrating and a little concerning.

The good news? Most refrigerator water and ice problems have simple causes. A filter that's past its prime, a temperature setting that's off by a few degrees, or a water line that got pinched the last time someone pushed the fridge back against the wall. We see these issues every week at Kelly's Appliance Center, and most of them are easy fixes.

Here's what to check before you call anyone, and how to know when it's time to bring in a technician.

1. Your Water Tastes Funny

This is the number one complaint we hear about fridge water systems, and the fix is almost always the same: replace your water filter. The manufacturer will tell you every six months, but honestly, most normal households can go about a year before the filter really gives out. If you're a family of five filling water bottles every day, then yeah, six months is probably right. But for a couple who mostly uses the dispenser for a glass here and there? You've got more time than the box says. The real test is your taste buds. When the water starts tasting metallic or like chlorine, that's your filter telling you it's done.

If you just installed a new filter and the water still tastes off, you probably need to flush the system. Run about two to three gallons through the dispenser before you drink from it. That clears out carbon particles and any air trapped in the new filter. It'll look cloudy at first. That's normal.

One thing to watch for: if you haven't used your water dispenser in a while, the water sitting in the internal reservoir can go stale. This happens a lot in vacation homes or during weeks when you're drinking bottled water instead. Dispense and dump the first glass or two, and it should taste fine after that.

When to call a pro: If you've replaced the filter, flushed the system, and the taste still isn't right, the issue could be a contaminated water supply line or mineral deposits inside the water inlet valve. A refrigerator repair technician can inspect both and get to the root of it.

2. Ice Cubes Look Cloudy or Taste Bad

Clear ice looks great. Cloudy ice with white flakes? Not so much. But cloudy ice is usually caused by dissolved minerals and trapped air in the water, not contamination. It's safe to consume. It just doesn't look appealing.

If your ice actually tastes bad, that's a different story. Ice absorbs odors from your freezer like a sponge. Got an open box of fish sticks next to the ice bin? You'll taste it. The fix is simple: dump the current batch of ice, clean the ice bin with warm water and a little baking soda, and make sure all freezer items are sealed properly. If you haven't replaced your water filter recently, do that too.

Sonoma County well water can be particularly mineral-heavy, which makes both the taste and the cloudiness more noticeable. A whole-house water softener or a dedicated under-sink filter can help, but changing your fridge filter on time is still the first line of defense.

3. Ice Maker Isn't Making Enough Ice

A healthy ice maker should produce about 3 to 4 pounds of ice every 24 hours. If your ice bin is taking forever to fill or you're constantly running out, there are a few likely culprits.

Check the freezer temperature. It should be set to 0 degrees Fahrenheit. If it's above 5 degrees, ice production slows down significantly because the water in the mold takes longer to freeze. A lot of people bump the temperature up to save energy and don't realize they're starving their ice maker.

Check the water filter. Yes, again. A clogged filter restricts water flow to the ice maker, so each cycle fills the mold only partway. You get small, thin, hollow ice cubes instead of full ones. That's a dead giveaway that water pressure to the ice maker is low.

Check the water supply line. Pull the fridge away from the wall and look at the thin copper or braided line that connects to the wall valve. If it's kinked, pinched, or frozen, water can't get through. Frozen supply lines are common in fridges pushed too far against the wall, where the line gets compressed and the cold from the freezer turns the trapped water to ice.

When to call a pro: If the filter is new, the temperature is right, and the supply line is clear, the water inlet valve is probably failing. It's an electrically controlled valve that opens to let water into the ice maker mold, and when it wears out, it either stops opening entirely or only opens partway. Replacing an inlet valve is a common repair that our technicians handle regularly. We stock valves for most major brands including Whirlpool, GE, Samsung, and LG. 4. Water Dispenser Is Painfully Slow

Waiting 30 seconds to fill a glass of water gets old fast. A slow dispenser is almost always a filter problem. Here's a quick test: remove the water filter and try dispensing without it (most fridges will still dispense with the filter removed or a bypass plug installed). If water flows much faster, you need a new filter.

If the flow is still slow without the filter, check the water pressure coming from your house supply. The fridge needs at least 20 PSI to operate the dispenser and ice maker properly. You can test this by disconnecting the supply line at the back of the fridge and holding the end over a bucket while turning on the valve. If water barely trickles out, the issue is your home's plumbing, not the fridge.

When to call a pro: If pressure is fine and the filter isn't the problem, the water inlet valve or the dispenser control board could be failing. These aren't DIY-friendly repairs because they involve electrical components and water connections that need to be done right to avoid leaks. Schedule a service call and we'll sort it out.

5. Ice Maker Stopped Completely

Before you assume it's broken, check the obvious. Is the ice maker turned on? Most models have a small wire arm or a switch on the side of the ice maker unit. If the arm is raised or the switch is in the off position, the ice maker won't run. Kids bump these. People accidentally flip them while rearranging freezer shelves. It happens more than you'd think.

Next, check if the water supply valve behind the fridge is fully open. If someone partially closed it during a kitchen renovation or plumbing repair, the ice maker won't get enough water to produce anything.

If the switch is on and the water supply is flowing, but no ice is being made, the ice maker module itself may need replacement. In French door refrigerators especially, ice maker failures are the single most common repair we see. The ice has to travel through the warm refrigerator compartment, which causes frozen lines, jammed mechanisms, and leaking seals. It's a design challenge that even premium brands struggle with.

6. Water Filter Basics: What You Need to Know

Since the water filter is behind most of these problems, let's talk about it for a minute. Your fridge filter is basically a cylinder of activated carbon. Water passes through it, and the carbon grabs chlorine, sediment, and other stuff that makes tap water taste off. It's not a water softener though, so it won't do anything about hard water or mineral deposits. For that you'd need a whole-house system. But for taste and clarity, the fridge filter makes a real difference.

Our rule of thumb: once a year for normal use, every six months for heavy use. The manufacturer says six months across the board, but that's partly because they sell filters. Your fridge has a filter indicator light, and it's worth paying attention to. But trust your senses first. If the water tastes fine and flows at a normal speed, the filter is still doing its job. If the taste changes or the flow slows to a trickle, swap it out regardless of what the light says.

Use the right filter for your model. We've seen cheap knockoff filters leak, not seat properly, or basically just let water pass through without doing much. They're tempting because they're half the price, but a leaking filter can cause water damage that costs way more than the savings. After installing a new filter: Run two to three gallons of water through the dispenser before drinking from it. Reset the filter indicator light (the process varies by brand, but it's usually pressing and holding a button for three seconds). And write the installation date on the filter with a marker so you remember when to replace it.

When It's Time to Call Kelly's

A lot of fridge water and ice maker issues can be solved with a fresh filter, the right temperature setting, and a quick look at the supply line. We encourage you to try those steps first. But when the basics don't fix it, the problem is usually a failing water inlet valve, a defective ice maker module, or a control board issue.
