Why We Still Show Up to Chamber Mixers

There is a version of running an appliance repair company where you never leave the truck. Take the call, do the job, send the invoice, go home. Plenty of shops run that way. We never have.

Kelly’s has been a member of the Rohnert Park, Windsor, and Novato chambers of commerce for years. We pay the dues, we go to the events, and we put their logos in our footer. Every so often somebody asks why a fifty year old repair company still bothers.

Fair question. Here is the honest answer.

Somebody has to vouch for you

Appliance repair has a trust problem, and it is not really our fault or yours. You are letting a stranger into your kitchen to take apart something expensive, and you have no way to judge whether the diagnosis is honest. The whole industry runs on that gap. Some outfits exploit it.

Online reviews help, but everybody knows they can be gamed. What still cannot be faked is a person who knows you saying so out loud. When a property manager asks the room who they should call about a dead refrigerator, the answer carries weight because somebody is putting their own name behind it.

That is most of what a chamber actually is. A room where people put their names behind each other.

The work goes both ways

We get calls out of those rooms, and that matters. But the part people underestimate is how often we are the ones making the referral.

A technician finds a leak behind a dishwasher that is a plumbing problem, not an appliance problem. A dryer is fine but the vent run through the attic is a mess and needs somebody who does that work. A range is dead because of a circuit, and that is an electrician’s call. We are in somebody’s house a few thousand times a year, and we see things that are not ours to fix.

Being able to say “call this person, I know them, tell them we sent you” is worth more to a customer than anything we could put in an ad. You cannot do that from a directory listing. You do it because you have met people.

It keeps you honest

This is the part nobody puts in the brochure. When you are a known quantity in a small business community, doing bad work has a cost that goes beyond one unhappy customer. Word moves. The person you shortchanged on Tuesday knows somebody who sees you at an event on Thursday.

Fifty years of the same idea

Bob Kelly started this company in 1975. It was a Marin operation first, then moved up to Sonoma County in 1987, and Mark took it over in 1990. Through all of that the approach has not changed much. Do good work, be findable, know your neighbors.

The North Bay is big enough to be a real market and small enough that reputation still travels by word of mouth. That combination rewards showing up. It has for fifty years and we do not expect it to stop.
